Carnelian is a mineral with a glowing red-orange colour. It is a special variety of the mineral Chalcedony, whose chemical composition and colour have been transformed by the presence of iron oxide.

Carnelian has been in use since the Neolithic era. Long before the common era, the stone was used for decorative purposes — crafted into artistic objects, jewellery, and signet rings.

Some Carnelian hearts have had a touch of red added to bring out a more vivid colour in the finished piece.
