Septarian with barite inclusions is a rock formation 160–180 million years old that draws attention for its unique appearance. It is most commonly a concretion of clay rock with iron impurities, threaded through with cracks.
The rock itself formed during the age of the dinosaurs, making it a truly special find for all lovers of crystals and fossils.
A concretion is a formation that develops in sedimentary rocks when a mineral cement (such as calcite) is deposited between particles of sediment, binding them into a compact mass — a concretion (for example, a septarian concretion, or septaria).
Because of its hard, dry exterior and moist interior that contracted over time, septaria cracks. These cracks can then be filled by various minerals, giving septarian its characteristic appearance of being threaded with "veins." Calcite and quartz are the most common. More rarely, these cracks are filled by barite, which is what makes these beautiful specimens from Madagascar all the more special.
