When a Palo Santo tree or its branches fall to the ground at the end of their life, the harvesters leave them to rest and dry for a further five to seven years. It is precisely this period of rest that allows the wood to develop the distinctive scent we know today.

Instructions for use

We gently and slowly light the Palo Santo stick over a flame. We recommend lighting it over the flame of a candle. Lighting it directly with a lighter is not ideal, as it introduces unpleasant odours into the process. We want the lighting process to feel natural — the way it has been done for thousands of years.

The first time we light Palo Santo, we allow a small flame to form. It is important that we do not blow the flame out. Shamans believe that by blowing the flame from your body, you release and extinguish your own soul. Instead, turn the stick vertically upward (so the flame is at the top), where it will naturally extinguish itself and begin to release the pleasant, deeply relaxing scent of sacred wood.

If the flame does not go out on its own, wave the stick gently through the air to let the breeze extinguish it.

Space cleansing

With the smouldering stick in hand, we walk through the space, drawing slow circles with the stick as we move. This prolongs the smouldering and extends the life of the Palo Santo smoke.

If we wish to cleanse a space of negative energy and invite good energy in, we carry the incense through every corner of the space and gently wrap the room in smoke. We then place the stick in a fireproof bowl and allow it to extinguish itself.

Not to worry — the stick will not burn all the way down, and you will be able to use it many times.

Boosting creativity

Palo Santo is also considered a wonderful way to boost creativity. This beautiful gift of Nature is used by many creative people, who light the incense whenever they need an extra spark of energy and creative flow.

Bring a Palo Santo stick into the space where you will be creating. Light it slowly, wait for it to catch gently, then extinguish it in the way described above. Place it beside your workspace in a fireproof bowl and enjoy the pleasant, lingering fragrance.
