Nephrite Jade is one of two mineral forms of jade. The other, even more precious variety is known as Jadeite.

Nephrite Jade belongs to the calcium, magnesium, and iron-rich amphibole minerals tremolite and actinolite.

In the vast majority of cases, Nephrite Jade appears in shades of green and greyish tones, and occasionally in yellow, brown, or white. Since prehistoric times its use has been linked primarily to decorative objects and amulets, while before the Common Era its hardness also made it a practical material for tools.

In older traditions, some believed that Nephrite Jade supported the wellbeing of the kidneys.

Before the Common Era, it was used in China as the "imperial gemstone" — more coveted and treasured than gold or silver. For a time it even served as a form of currency.

The Māori of New Zealand call Nephrite Jade "tonga," meaning treasure, and treat it as such. Since 1840 this remarkable crystal has been protected in their territory. There is a deep-held belief that it carries a magical power, and so jewellery and amulets made from it are passed down from generation to generation.

Today, Nephrite Jade is no less beloved — it is still believed to radiate a truly special energy.
