Mookaite, also known as "Mookaite Jasper", is in fact a silicified porcellanite mineral that comes in a range of colours. It most commonly appears in deep red or deep yellow, though examples in beige, brown, grey, and purple are also known.
Its name derives from the word "mooka", used by Indigenous Australians, meaning "running waters".
Because of its origins, Mookaite may also contain fossils. One of its larger deposits is found in Western Australia, where it is rich in tiny fossils of nanoplankton — specifically Radiolaria and Foraminifera. These two plankton played a significant role in the formation of this magical stone.
