Lapis Lazuli was first mined as far back as the 7th millennium BCE. Even then, it was used by people of the highest rank — kings, queens, priests, and healers. It was also used in Tutankhamun's funeral mask.

It was also used to produce one of the more beautiful and precious pigments — ultramarine — which was favoured by renowned painters.
