Lapis Lazuli was first mined as early as the 7th millennium BCE. Even then, it was the stone of those at the highest ranks of society — kings, queens, priests, and healers. It was also used in the funeral mask of Tutankhamun.

From it, one of the most beautiful and precious pigments was produced — ultramarine — a colour used by celebrated painters throughout history.
