Labradorite is a beautiful dark mineral that shimmers with extraordinary colour when held at the right angle in the light. This play of colour is called labradorescence, and it is one of the reasons this stone is especially beloved among crystal enthusiasts and collectors.

One of the most famous legends of Labradorite also tells the story of the beautiful colours "captured" within this stone. An old legend says that the Northern Lights — the Aurora Borealis — were trapped for a long time in the rocks along the coast of Labrador in Canada. One day an Inuit warrior came along, spotted the lights caught within, and struck the rock with his spear. This act freed the Northern Lights, yet some of the light and energy remained forever within the stones.

Labradorite then took its name from this very coastline.
