Petrified wood — also known as "Fairy Wood" — is permineralised fossilised wood more than 200 million years old. Over time, the organic matter of the wood was replaced by silicates (quartz), which in some areas micro-crystallised, giving petrified wood its characteristic glistening, magical appearance.

The fallen tree was first covered by sediment (mud, sand or volcanic ash), which protected it and prevented the bacteria that would otherwise have decomposed it from doing their work. Over the years, mineral-rich groundwater permeated the wood. These minerals gradually filled the pores of the wood and replaced the organic material, causing the wood to petrify while retaining its original structure and appearance.
