Heliotrope has a rich and extensive history. Albertus Magnus called it the "stone of Babylon" and attributed magical properties to it.

Pliny the Elder mentioned several times that the first "sorcerers" used it as a stone of invisibility.

Damigeron wrote that this mineral could summon rain, and he also believed it held special powers for divination and preserving youth.

Christian tradition says that the red spots were formed during Jesus's crucifixion, while the Romans believed the mineral could stop bleeding.
